AdenosineDiagnostic and therapeutic agent in supraventricular tachycardia. Slows the sinus rate. Reduces automaticity and increases refractoriness. Administered IV always, initial dose 6 mg.
AdrenalineUsed in cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, and to induce local vasoconstriction. Vasoconstricts peripherally. Vasodilates vessels feeding the heart. Bronchodilation and suppression of mast cells.
Aldosterone antagonistsSpironolactone & epleronone. Ascites and oedema due to liver cirrhosis, chronic heart failure, primary hyperaldosteronism. Decreases ENaC, decreases sodium and water reuptake in kidney = diuresis.
Alpha blockersDoxazosin & tamsulosin. A1 blockers. Used for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia and resistant HT. Cause vasodilation and relaxation of urinary smooth muscle.
AmiodaroneClass III antiarrythmic, used in cardiac arrest. Prolongs repolarisation phase. Blocks Na, Ca, K channels, antagonist at alpha and beta receptors.
