The Second Coming

scallamander's version from 2016-09-22 00:45

Stanza 1

Question Answer
Line 1Turning and turning in the widening gyre
Line 2The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Line 3Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Line 4Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
Line 5The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
Line 6The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
Line 7The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Line 8Are full of passionate intensity.

Stanza 2

Question Answer
Line 10Surely some revelation is at hand;
Line 11Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
Line 12The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
Line 13When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Line 14Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
Line 15A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
Line 16A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Line 17Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Line 18Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

Stanza 3

Question Answer
Line 19The darkness drops again but now I know
Line 20That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Line 21Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
Line 22And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Line 23Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
