Grammar

Preterite Stem Changes (e → i, o → u)

As before, -ar and -er verbs with stem changes in the present do NOT have a stem change in the prederite. Verbs in the -ir form only have stem changes in the él/ella/Ud. and ellos/ellas/Uds. forms. Verbs whose stems change from e → ie in the present form change from e → i in the preterite forms for él/ella/Ud. and ellos/ellas/Uds. Also, -ir verbs whose stems change from o → ue in the present tense change from o → u in the same prederite forms.

Here is a list of verbs with stem changes along with their corresponding prederite stem changes:

Verboyo Formél/ella/Ud Formellos/ellas/Uds Form

Double-Object Pronouns

Two objects are often used to avoid redundancy - a direct object (the "it") and the indirect object (the "who"). In Spanish when both direct and indirect pronouns are utilized the indirect object ***ALWAYS*** precedes the direct object.

PersonDouble Object Pronouns
yome lo (la, los, las)
te lo (la, los, las)
él/ella/Ud.se lo (la, los, las)
nosnos lo (la, los, las)
vosos lo (la, los, las)
ellos/ellas/Uds.se lo (la, los, las)
memorize

Notice that instead of the usual 3rd person Indirect pronouns le or les, that se is used instead. So when both of the pronouns begin with the letter L, the indirect object is transformed into se.

Por versus para

The confusion of por versus para results from the fact that both can be translated as "for", so the true meaning of the word, as well as which word to use, must be taken from contextual clues.

Subjectporpara
Peoplebecause of, on behalf of, on account offor the benefit of
Thingsin lieu of, instead offor use with
Space and Timethrough, by way of, duringgo to a destination, for an outcome, for a goal
memorize

Remember, por and para can be translated as "for", but that doesn't help us figure out which to use. So if you can substitute one of the phrases above you can figure out which word to use. Examples are below.

Examples of por vs para for People:
Digo por mis padres - I speak on behalf of my family
Corro para mi salud - I run for the benefit of my health

Examples of por vs. para for things:
Sustituimos el correr por el paseo - I substituted a walk in place of a run
Esta cuchara (spoon) es para sopa - This spoon is for use with soup

Examples of por vs. para for places and time:
Viajamos por Cleveland - We travel through Cleveland
Vamos para Cleveland - We go to Cleveland
