Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification is the international standard interface used for cable modems, which handle incoming and outgoing data signals between a cable TV operator and a computer or TV set. DOCSIS specifies modulation schemes and the protocol for exchanging bidirectional signals over cable. DOCSIS 1.0 was ratified by the International Telecommunication Union in 1998. DOCSIS is now known as CableLabs Certified Cable Modems. With certification from CableLabs, manufacturers will be able to produce cable modems for retail, so consumers no longer have to depend on leased cable modems from their cable providers.
