What is a port?In networking a port designates an endpoint. When you tell a program to send something to a specific IP address, it needs to know where to go after it gets there. Think of it somewhat like a building number; when you send a letter or a package you wouldn't just tell them to send it to Networking St., they probably wouldn't even try delivering it if you did as they wouldn't know the final destination. You would tell them to send it to 8080 Networking St. so they know what building to send it to.
