Geography Terms
Term | Definition |

latitude | lines that measure distances in degrees that run east and west |
longitude | lines that measure distances in degrees that run north and south |
equator | is an imaginary belt that runs halfway point between the North Pole and the South Pole, it is 0 degree latitude |
North Pole | The northern end of the earth's axis of rotation, a point in the Arctic Ocean. |
South Pole | The southern end of the earth's axis of rotation, a point in Antarctica. |
Prime Meridian | is an imaginary line that runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Western Africa, and Antarctica, it is 0 degree longitude |
Inset Map | a small map on the same sheet of paper as a larger map that provides additional information that cannot be shown conveniently on the larger map |
Map Title | serves to focus attention on the primary content of the map |
Map Key/Legend | Objects or colors that represent something on the map. |
Map Scale | there is a direct connection between a unit of measurement on the map and the actual distance. |
Number of Continents | 7 |
Number of Oceans | 4 |
List Continents | Asia, Africa, North America, South America. Europe, Australia, Antarctica |
List Oceans | Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans. |
Compass | is a tool that helps the user know what direction one is headed. |
Compass Rose | on a map, it helps the user locate directions |
cardinal directions | There are four: north, south, east, and west. They help describe the location of places in relation to other places |
intermediate directions | There are four: northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest. They help describe the location of places in relation to other places |
